What is available to help me with my health and well-being in Llanelli?

The Llanelli Cluster describes the area in south-east Carmarthenshire and surrounding the Llanelli community. This includes as far north as Llannon (Carmarthenshire), as far west as Pembrey, and as far east as Llangennech.

There are lots of services based in the Llanelli Cluster that can support you with your health and well-being.

What is a Cluster?

You will sometimes hear your area described as a ‘Cluster’. This describes how lots of local services involved in health and care in a geographical area work together. The aim is to better co-ordinate the well-being of people and communities.

Llanelli has a population of 59,900 which is made up of approximately 26,200 households.

The Llanelli cluster has:

  • 16 community pharmacies
  • 5 optometric practices (opticians)
  • 7 dental practices and 1 orthodontic practice
  • 7 GP practices with 1 branch surgery
  • 1 hospital (Prince Philip Hospital)
  • 1 community clinic (Elizabeth Williams Clinic)
  • 14 nursing and residential homes
  • 1 community resource team

You can find out how some of these services can help you, and which is best to help you in different circumstances, by visiting our web resource and My Health My Choice video series here (opens in new tab).

There is a range of other Community Services that can provide care and support in, or near to, your own home.

The aim is to provide most of your care as close to home as possible. This can keep you well for longer and avoid you having to travel to hospital when you don’t need to. These teams also help us to get you home from hospital more quickly, when you are ready.

We also want you to be supported to make choices about your own health and well-being and be empowered and supported to live the best quality life.

About our population

Much of our area is urban and Llanelli has a notable level of social deprivation, with several communities in the most deprived in Wales.

People are living with multiple health problems. This means they can need health and care for lots of different reasons and from different professionals at the same time.

In the Llanelli Cluster we know that the greatest health risks/conditions are:

  • COPD
  • diabetes
  • frailty
  • mental health
  • hypertension

Below are some examples of cluster funded projects that aim to support the health and well-being of this local population.

  •  Mental health services continue to be a priority. We want to ensure we are commissioning the right services for our patients.
  • Providing local, easily accessed spirometry testing. This is measuring how much air you can breathe in one forced breath to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions. The aim is to achieve no waiting list for future testing.
  • Empowering patients by encouraging and signposting them to support to take control of their own health and wellbeing. All care providers are working together as an inclusive team to promote self-care and well-being
