Why are we thinking about Arts & Health?

At Hywel Dda University Health Board we have a shared vision with our communities for us to live healthy, joyful lives.

Our strategy called ‘A Healthier Mid and West Wales: Our future generations living well’ shares our vision for improving health and well-being for our communities.

As part of this work, we are keen to build on the knowledge and growing evidence base that tells us that the arts have a powerful role to play in supporting health and wellbeing.

We believe that everyone should be able to start well, live well, age well and die well.

Being well is about more than just good health, it’s about how we feel about ourselves and how we connect with each other and our environment.

We are developing an arts & health vision, in which creativity is at the heart of all our services, helping patients and their families, communities and staff, to improve their health and wellbeing though taking part in the arts.

We are keen to develop arts & health projects where there is proven health and wellbeing benefits such as:

Improving mobility, balance and preventing falls through dance.

Reducing loneliness and social isolation through storytelling

Supporting patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinsons and those effected by stroke, as well as their carers

Singing to connect and uplift people, improving memory, lung health and outcomes for long Covid patients.

Visual arts are being used to improve mental health for children, young people, adults and older people living with dementia - helping all ages to build coping skills for life.

The arts extend beyond creative activities and have a foundation in the fabric of our buildings – the arts can help us to create healthcare spaces in which patients can recover more quickly and healthcare staff want to work in.

The arts can create environments which raise our spirits, soothe and comfort us and help us to feel better.

The arts help us to commemorate, reflect and mark those who we have loved and lost.

We want you to know what you think. How might the arts help to improve people’s health and wellbeing across Hywel Dda?

We want you to be part of the conversation about how we can embed the arts across Hywel Dda so that we can help to create a vibrant community in which we can all thrive throughout all stages of life.

We would love to hear from you.

Please don't worry if taking part digitally is not suitable for you. We are happy to find another way to help you to participate and as we are keen to learn what you think. Please get in touch with our Arts in Health Coordinator Kathryn Lambert on kathryn.lambert@wales.nhs.uk if you would like to find out more or wish us to come and share with your group or community. by Stuart Evans, 4 months ago

Haul exists to promote creative activities for those who are unwell, for those recovering from illness and for those who have a caring and supporting role. The need for these life enhancing activities results in people coming together to help each other, communicate a positive outlook and ultimately make people feel better about themselves and their lives. In a rural area it is vitally important to support and engage people in isolation. Haul organises activities in remote and often out... Continue reading

    Arts Health with SPAN Arts

    by SpanArts, 5 months ago

SPAN Arts is a community arts charity based in Narberth with over 30 years of experience in programming arts events across Pembrokeshire.

During lockdown, SPAN expanded upon its arts and wellbeing work with the aim of reducing anxiety, isolation and loneliness within the local community.

Making use of the growing number of remote and hybrid events during the pandemic, SPAN programmed several projects that connected rurally isolated and housebound individuals.

Projects included online community theatre 'Theatr Soffa', 'Remote Choir' featuring residents of care homes, and 'Shared Worlds' creative writing workshops for individuals with caring responsibilities.
